- Timothée Chalamet joins Josh Safdie’s first solo film

Timothée Chalamet is still making waves for his turn as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown but he’s already hard at work on his next feature, Marty Supreme.
The 29-year-old will join the Josh half of the directing duo known as the Safdie Brothers for the filmmaker’s first film without his sibling Benny.

Fans may recognize the latter from his role in Christopher Nolan’s bomb-epic Oppenheimer. He played Hungarian theoretical physicist Edward Teller.
Meanwhile, both brothers have made a name for themselves behind the camera as the creators of nail-biting dramas. 2017’s Good Time with Robert Pattinson and 2019’s Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler each garnered critical acclaim.

Josh reteamed with Sandler to film the comedian’s latest comedy special Love You in late 2024. However, it’s Marty Supreme that’ll mark his debut solo feature.

When is Marty Supreme released?
Marty Supreme has set a theatrical release of 25 December 2025 in the United States and Canada. It’s likely the film will be released in early January in the United Kingdom although this hasn’t been confirmed by distributor A24.
The film’s Christmas Day debut marks an end-of-the-year trend for Chalamet. His family-friendly film Wonka hit cinemas in the United States on 15 December 2023. Meanwhile, A Complete Unknown was released Stateside on Christmas Day 2024.

Unfortunately not. With filming still underway, there’s no trailer – or any official footage – for Marty Supreme just yet.

What is Marty Supreme about?
According to reports, Marty Supreme takes its cues from the life and career of the professional table tennis player Marty Reisman. However, the film will also blend fictional elements into its narrative. The movie will be a period drama of sorts, set – partly at least – in 1940s America.
For those unaware, Reisman Was an American table tennis champion who won the U.S Men’s singles championship in 1958 and 1960. Later in life, he became a U.S. hardball champion in 1997, making him the oldest player to win such a title.
According to Deadline, the project has been described as a “fictionalised original” instead of a straight-up biopic. The film has been written by Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, the same scribe who helped the Safdies pen Uncut Gems.
Reports have suggested that Chalamet honed his ping-pong skills under the tutelage of former players Wei Wang and Diego Schaaf.
According to a ScreenRant article, Josh wanted Chalemet’s eyes to appear smaller and asked him to wear both prescription glasses and contact lenses. The star claimed that the technique temporarily impacted his eyesight.
Who is starring in the film?
Chalemet will star in the titular role of Marty. His involvement was confirmed in the summer of 2024.
He’ll be joined by Gwyneth Paltrow in a mystery role. However, if paparazzi set photographs are to be believed, she could be playing a love interest for Marty.
In addition to Paltrow, This Is Spinal Tap star Fran Drescher will play Marty’s mother but that’s where concrete character details end. Marty Supreme also boasts a starry ensemble cast but at the time of writing, their characters remain under wraps.
These include musician Tyler The Creator, Ghosts star Odessa A’zion, magician Penn Jillette and actress Sandra Bernhard. Together, they’ll be joined by TV personality Kevin O’Leary, filmmaker and actor Abel Ferrara and newcomer Spenser Granese.
